Plexiglas VS Acrylic

Is there a conflict between the 2 materials?

The title of this article is voluntarily controversial since there is no fight between Plexiglass and Acrylic.

ACRYLIC

Acrylic ia thermoplastic material, also known as PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate for the chemical experts). Acrylic is one of the best alternative to glass. Even if it is more expensive than glass, acrylic is stronger and more resistant. But the most important feature is that acrylic is easy when it comes to cnc milling, bending or glueing.

PLEXIGLAS

Plexiglass is basically a commercial name of acrylic (PMMA) and is a registered brand from Röhm GmbH (www.roehm.com). Just a little detail on the name Plexiglas. Plexiglas is the union of two words: Plexi, from the latic plectere (a reference to the polymer structure) and Glas (glass in German). Plexiglas is a great alternative to glass, for the better mechanical properties and being clearer than glass.

Therefore the real match is not between acrylic and plexiglass but between acrylic (or Plexiglas, or Perspex or other commercial versions) VS glass.

Optical clarity, abrasive resistance, flexibility, low weight and resistance are in favour of acrylic together with many more characteristics.

Another important difference in the world of acrylic is the difference between extruded or cast acrylic. But this will be the subject of a further article.

MILLING ACRYLIC AND PLEXIGLASS WITH PROTEK CNC

Protek CNC can provide all the necessary tools and strategies to cut or mill acrylic. Protek CNC machine are specifically designed to perform in the best way during

acrylic cnc milling. Check this video by clicking here, to watch UNICO TT milling plexiglas.

As you can see the Protek CNC machine can cut, engrave and polish the acrylic..
